earning money

These are our charts the kids use to earn money. They are hidden on our pantry door so we don't have to look at them all the time, but they are easily reached by the kids. Once it's full of smiley faces, they can earn one dollar. You can earn a face by doing something nice for someone (without being asked!) or an extra chore. We've been using these for almost a year, and it works pretty well for us. The faces are velcroed on so when it's full they just pull them off and start over. The rules are you can't ask for a smiley face, and you can't put on more than one face...if you do that, you get two taken off. I have been known to yank off a smiley face for obnoxious behavior...but not so much anymore.

The old reward system, and still requested at times, was to get to pull a surprise out of the can.

They are things like choose an extra book at bedtime, go swimming (popular in winter), feed the ducks (not so much fun anymore) and the standard dollar store toy..plus a few more. I do think it's time to update these. Joaquin likes to pick one and put it back until he gets what he wants. I try to discourage this! Isabela is now saving for a pair of shoes...for her bear!
