One chilly morning, I was just finishing up making pancakes for breakfast. Carmen was in her high chair, and Diego wandered out from his cozy bed half-asleep and half-dressed and plopped down at the table.
I glanced over, and he had picked up a pancake from the table and was holding it on his bare belly.
Me: Diego! What are you doing? Don't put pancakes on your belly.
Diego: But I'm cold!
Me: Well...we put clothes on when we're cold, not pancakes.
Have you ever heard of warming up by pancakes? I did have to grab the camera for some shots of him warming his hands and face. And then he ate them.

a great toddler gift
Trying to get some Christmas stuff done with a toddler underfoot?
Several squirts of shaving cream lasted us a good hour this morning!
I'd squirt little piles on her tray and call them snowmen.
It looks like a giant snowball!
When she got bored, I'd add a cookie cutter, or a sponge paint brush, and it was all new again.
Santa should put a bottle of shaving cream in her stocking!

thrifty Christmas
Thrifty. Cheap. Inexpensive. Budgeting. Whatever you call it, that's the theme of Christmas this year.
And even if you like to make gifts and decorations, it's not that cheap if you have to buy all the stuff to make them. The trick is using what you already have around the house.
Nothing says Christmas like a wreath on the door, right?
This is one I whipped up quickly with some ribbon and a cereal box. Just open up the cereal box and trace a circular plate and cut it out. You can use something to trace a smaller circle for the hole in the middle, or just eyeball it like I did. Once you have your cardboard wreath cut out, just wrap your ribbon around it. Add a bow or maybe hot glue some wooden ornaments to it, and you have a brand new wreath!
Now, I'm not sure it would hold up to the elements. Our door is on a covered front porch. But you maybe able to use it inside somewhere if your door is not protected from the rain and snow.
And now for a present to make: This is our favorite thing right now....LETTER PILLOWS! And it all came about by accident. We had only four dollars in the bank and a birthday party to go to for twin boys and no presents! My cousin suggested we make something. (Thanks, Elizabeth!)
I didn't know what to make tween twins...(say that 5 times fast).
But pinterest came through with this idea that we turned into these pillows.
But we had to make them just a little bit cooler with a pocket on the back. It could fit a stuffed animal, a book, even a tablet or iPod.
And now everybody wants one! Luckily, we have two old sofa cushions filled with stuffing that I've been waiting to use on some project.
And lastly, here's a simple kettle corn recipe that's been fun to make.
1/4 cup canola oil
1/2 cup popping corn
1/4 cup sugar
Use a large pot with a lid, add the oil to medium heat, plus three popcorn kernels. When those three pop, you know the oil is hot enough. Quickly add the rest of the popcorn, and the sugar then cover. Now comes the fun part: Let it sit on the burner for 3-5 seconds, then carefully shake the pot with it's lid on for 3-5 seconds, alternating until it's all popped. If you don't shake it, it will burn. You'll get a little workout before you eat it!
Once it's done, add salt and transfer to another bowl just in time to watch your movie.
(FYI, you can pop plain kernels in a brown lunch bag in the microwave, too. Add just enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the bag (maybe 1/4 cup), fold the top of the bag over twice and hit the popcorn button on your microwave. It's just like microwave popcorn minus the bad for you stuff. Then you can add salt and whatever else you like on your popcorn. Yum!)

thankful faces
Smiles when we left for DC, and smiles when we left for home.
Joaquin's feeding Aunt Leah Ann's dog, Ivy, some popcorn. Dogs are great entertainment, but I'm not falling for one yet.
Carmen latched on to this mini piano--it didn't even have batteries in it--and the thing ended up at our house somehow.
Cutie cousin Jon.
Uncle David...he looks a little like a scarecrow on a pole in this picture.
Aunt Leah Ann cooking away. She whipped up a great lunch for us on NO notice...sorry about that!!
Cutie cousin Evan.
There's that Ivy again. She just won't stay away! Carmen wanted nothing to do with her and clung to me for dear life.
Onward to DC. We thought about going to the zoo, but we arrived pretty late and changed our minds. See? Who cares? We're working with low expectations here.
Aunt Beth has some pretty cool art in her house.
Isabela taught Carmen why it's good to help out in the kitchen.
I, of course, am useless at Thanksgiving. Little Carmen was on my hip most of the night.
Cutie Joaquin.
And the whole family...this was taken just before we left DC at 10pm. We love Thanksgiving.
fun with leaf blowers
Who knew leaf blowing could be this much fun??
I like to call these next two: "Where's Diego?"
I know, I know. We have a lot of leaves. At one point, Joaquin declared, "There's more leaves in our yard than people in the world."
I think the size of the final pile from the front and back yards was about 20 feet wide, 50 feet long, and 3 feet high.
Isabela said her hands felt smooth after pushing that blower for 30 minutes...more like numb from vibrations, I'd say.
See that little pile of ashes to the right of the fire...that's all that was left of those poor leaves in the end.
And Diego learned a good lesson: don't drop your marshmallow on the dirt. Oh, and guess what! Today, our yard looks like it hasn't been raked all fall. I don't know if it will be as much fun the second time around.

expectations
This is the season where my expectations of life are often unmet with what reality brings.
A happy family decorating the tree while singing Christmas carols, often turns into a room full of boxes and tissue with a tree jammed with ornaments on one side that I missed seeing get hung because I was changing the baby.
Here are some wise words on the subject:
Expect nothing, live frugally on surprise. Alice Walker
Do what you can with what you have where you are. Theodore Roosevelt
I'm not in this world to live up to your expectations and you're not in this world to live up to mine. Bruce Lee
Life is so constructed that an event does not, cannot, will not, match the expectation. Charlotte Bronte
Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.
Alexander Pope
A wonderful gift may not be wrapped as you expect. Jonathan Huie
Wishing you (and me!) many happy surprises this season.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
